Aung San Suu Kyi's NLD expected to win in the Myanmar elections
Though her party is set for the big win, Suu Kyi is barred from the presidential run as she failed to comply with the rules for becoming a President in the country.
Her marriage to a Brighton is hailed as the biggest impediment in her presidential bid, though Suu Kyi still remains a major impactful figure in Myanmar's political sphere.
Bearing a testimony to her countrywide popularity, former Australian ambassador to Myanmar, Trevor Wilson was quoted by the ABC as saying, "There's no doubt that she is seen as being somebody who has extraordinary personality and integrity."
"You see the NLD flag and photographs of her being displayed quite widely around the country," Wilson said, while adding, "That's not necessarily telling us [the NLD is] going to win the elections, but she certainly is still extremely popular, that is something that's not just confected outside the country by the international community."
Around 6,200 candidates from 93 political parties are contesting the elections. Myanmar currently has around 30 million eligible voters.
