Shehbaz Sharif faces Hafiz Saeed question at UN, refuses to respond

In a video, a journalist could be heard asking Sharif: “Prime Minister, when will you stop harbouring terrorists?”

Sharif did not respond and continued walking.

As per another video, he was asked bya  journalist: "When will you prosecute Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) chief Hafiz Saeed?"

He once again walked away without responding.

The incident comes amid renewed attention on Saeed following remarks by Pakistani cleric Naseer Madni, who claimed that the LeT founder had sent 10,000 terrorists to Kashmir.

Madni made the claim on August 14 while addressing a gathering in Bahawalnagar associated with the banned terrorist organisation, according to media reports. The figure of 10,000, however, remains a claim made by the cleric and has not been independently established.

Madni had reportedly suffered a serious cardiac episode while delivering a Friday sermon earlier in August before returning to public appearances.

His remarks have once again drawn attention to Saeed's alleged role in directing and facilitating terrorist activities targeting India, particularly in Jammu and Kashmir.

Hafiz Saeed's links to LeT

Saeed is the founder and former chief of Lashkar-e-Taiba, a Pakistan-based organisation designated as a terrorist group by the United Nations.

The UN Security Council's sanctions regime listed LeT in May 2005 over its association with Al-Qaeda, while Saeed himself was added to the UN sanctions list in December 2008 for his association with LeT and Al-Qaeda and for alleged involvement in financing, planning, facilitating and supporting activities of the organisations.

The United States designated Saeed under its terrorism sanctions framework in May 2008 and has previously offered a reward of up to $10 million for information leading to his arrest or conviction.

Saeed has also featured prominently in investigations into major terrorist attacks in India, including the November 2008 Mumbai attacks.

Saeed named in Pahalgam terror case

Saeed has also been named by Indian investigators in connection with the April 2025 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, in which 26 people were killed.

In July 2026, a special NIA court in Jammu issued a non-bailable warrant against Saeed after the National Investigation Agency filed a supplementary chargesheet naming him in the case.

The development came as Indian authorities continued pursuing legal action against individuals accused of involvement in the attack, including those currently outside the country.

26/11 attacks and LeT

The November 2008 Mumbai attacks remain one of the major terror cases linked to LeT.

On November 26, 2008, 10 terrorists entered Mumbai by sea and carried out coordinated attacks at several locations across the city. The assault lasted four days and killed 166 people, while hundreds were injured.

The attackers targeted several prominent locations, including hotels, railway facilities and other public spaces.

The attacks triggered international condemnation and a major investigation into the planning, financing and support networks behind the operation.

US authorities have previously identified Saeed as the founder of LeT and said he participated in planning the 2008 Mumbai attacks.

The latest remarks by Madni constitute a separate allegation concerning the scale of LeT's activities in Kashmir and should be treated as his claim rather than independently verified evidence.
