Boeing bags massive US Navy contract for ‘game-changing’ sixth-generation fighter

The U.S. Navy has awarded Boeing a multi-billion-dollar contract to produce its next-generation F/A-XX fighter aircraft, the company announced.

The sixth-generation fighter is being developed with advanced mission systems, an open mission systems architecture, and increased operational reach and capacity. The F/A-XX is intended to replace the U.S. Navy’s fleet of F/A-18 Super Hornets.

“It’s an honor to be selected to produce the Navy’s first sixth-generation platform,” said Steve Parker, president and chief executive officer of Boeing Defense, Space & Security.

“Backed by decades of work, bolstered by game-changing innovations and solidified by the investments we’ve made in new facilities uniquely suited to build multiple products with next-generation capabilities, our dedicated and talented team is ready to execute this critical program,” Parker added.

The Navy also released an artist’s rendering of the Boeing F/A-XX, highlighting the sixth-generation fighter that will replace the F/A-18 Super Hornet. The image was released by the Naval Air Systems Command under Public Release SPR-2026-0601 and is approved for public release.

The F/A-XX contract marks Boeing’s second major selection for a sixth-generation fighter program. The company was previously selected for the U.S. Air Force’s F-47 program in 2025.

“Delivering two advanced fighters in parallel was always our plan, and we invested accordingly. We are ready and able to build multiple concurrent future combat aircraft franchise programs,” Parker said.

Boeing is also continuing construction of a secure manufacturing facility in St. Louis, Missouri. The company describes the facility as the largest of its kind in the United States and says it will form part of an advanced, all-digital aerospace design and manufacturing system.

“Investment in facilities is just one part of the story; we’re also investing in technology and people so that we can deliver for our customers,” Parker added.

Technical and programmatic details of the F/A-XX remain classified under U.S. national security and export-control laws.
