British PM Theresa May condoles Stephen Hawking's death
London, Mar 14 (IBNS): British Prime Minister Theresa May on Wednesday mourned the death of British physicist Stephen Hawking.
May said Hawking's 'legacy' will not be forgotten.
"Professor Stephen Hawking was a brilliant and extraordinary mind - one of the great scientists of his generation. His courage, humour and determination to get the most from life was an inspiration. His legacy will not be forgotten," May tweeted.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the death of the scientist was 'anguishing'.
"Professor Stephen Hawking was an outstanding scientist and academic. His grit and tenacity inspired people all over the world. His demise is anguishing. Professor Hawking’s pioneering work made our world a better place. May his soul rest in peace," Modi posted.
NASA posted: "Remembering Stephen Hawking, a renowned physicist and ambassador of science. His theories unlocked a universe of possibilities that we & the world are exploring. May you keep flying like superman in microgravity, as you said to astronauts on @Space_Station in 2014."
British physicist Stephen Hawking, who was known for his work with black holes and relativity, has died, his family confirmed.
He was 76.
His family said in a statement that was reported by BBC which read: "We are deeply saddened that our beloved father passed away today."
Hawking was known for writing several popular science books.
He wrote the science book titled 'A Brief History of Time'.
In the statement his children, Lucy, Robert and Tim said: "He was a great scientist and an extraordinary man whose work and legacy will live on for many years."
Hawking had a rare early-onset, slow-progressing form of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) that gradually paralysed him over the decades.
He was still able to communicate using a single cheek muscle attached to a speech-generating device.
Interestingly, he was diagnosed with a rare form of motor neurone disease at the age of 22.
He was given just few years to live but Hawking went ahead to emerge as one of the most popular scientists of recent times.
His scientific works include a collaboration with Roger Penrose on gravitational singularity theorems in the framework of general relativity and the theoretical prediction that black holes emit radiation, often called Hawking radiation.
