China asks US to stop boosting relationship with Taiwan

Beijing: China is irked by the decision taken by US and Taiwan to commence economic talks and said Beijing opposes official exchanges between the two nations.

"China consistently opposes official exchanges between the US and the Taiwan region. We urge the US to adhere to the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiques, stop all forms of official exchanges and contacts with Taiwan, stop elevating its relationship with the Taiwan region in any substantive way, prudently and properly handle Taiwan-related issues, and send no misleading signals to the Taiwan separatist forces, so as to avoid serious damage to China-U.S. relations and peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait," Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Webin told reporters.

"Enlisting support from external forces will not help build up their unjust cause, and no one and no attempt will succeed in sabotaging the relations between the mainland and the Taiwan region," he said.

The Chinese government last month again made claims over Taiwan, calling it a part of the People's Republic of China (PRC).

Spokesperson of the government department called 'Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council', Zhu Fenglian claimed that events related to Taiwan's recovery from Japanese occupation were "irrefutable evidence" that the island was a part of the PRC.

He warned that those seeking separation are harming the well-being of Taiwanese people.
