Daraa's explosion targets Syrian military vehicle

Damascus, Jul 17 (Xinhua/UNI) The explosion that was reported in Syria's southern province of Daraa on Wednesday appeared to be targeting a Syrian military vehicle, state TV reported.

The preliminary report indicates that the vehicle was targeted on the Yadodeh road near the al-Dahiyeh neighborhood in Daraa, leaving killed and wounded personnel.

The report said "terrorists" targeted the military vehicle.

As the birthplace of the Syrian war that erupted in 2011, Daraa is both symbolically and militarily significant for the Syrian army which won a big victory by recapturing the province from the rebels in 2018.

Meanwhile, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights war monitor said that a roadside bomb went off while a military bus was passing by with no reports about casualties yet.

On July 15, unknown gunmen opened their fire on a military camp in Dara, leaving many wounded soldiers.

The UK-based watchdog group said that a new rebel group called the "Popular Resistance" has emerged in Daraa following the liberation of that area by the Syrian army.

The aim of the new group is to target the positions of the Syrian Army and renew the rebellion in Daraa.

It said the latest targeting bore the hallmark of the "Popular Resistance" group.
