Hunted down: Six more arrested in mob killing of Hindu worker Dipu Das in Bangladesh

The arrests were made during a raid conducted by the Detective Branch (DB) police in Bhaluka upazila of Mymensingh district on Thursday, according to local media reports.

Those arrested have been identified as Takbir (22) of Sunamganj, Ruhul Amin (42) of Thakurgaon, Nur Alam (33) of Sadar upazila, Shamim Mia (28) of Tarakanda upazila in Mymensingh, Selim Mia (22) of Noakhali, and Masum Khalashi (23) of Madaripur district, the Dhaka Tribune reported.

Acting on a tip-off, a DB police team carried out the operation and detained the suspects, a district police media release said. Investigators stated that the arrested individuals had allegedly forced Dipu Chandra Das to resign from his job prior to the fatal attack.

With these arrests, the total number of people detained in connection with the crime has risen to 18, police said.

Another fatal lynching raises fresh alarm

Even as the investigation into Das’s killing continues, Bangladesh has witnessed another fatal lynching, further intensifying concerns over mob violence and public safety.

The latest victim has been identified as Amrit Mondal, also known as Samrat, who was allegedly beaten to death by local residents following accusations of extortion, according to police accounts.

The incident has deepened anxiety over deteriorating law and order, particularly among minority communities, amid ongoing political and social unrest in the country.

Police detail events leading to Mondal’s death

Police said they rushed to the scene after receiving emergency information and found Mondal in critical condition, The Daily Star reported. He was immediately taken to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Mondal’s body was later transferred to the Rajbari Sadar Hospital morgue for post-mortem examination.

Killing comes days after Dipu Das lynching

The latest lynching occurred less than a week after Dipu Chandra Das, a Hindu youth, was beaten to death by a mob in Mymensingh district.

Das was allegedly accused of blasphemy, assaulted, and his body was later set on fire—an incident that sparked sharp criticism at home and abroad and renewed scrutiny of the safety of religious minorities in Bangladesh.

The back-to-back incidents have amplified calls for stronger action against mob violence and greater protection for vulnerable communities.
