Legco meeting chaos: Hong Kong lawmaker Ted Hui arrested
Hong Kong: Hong Kong's Democratic Party lawmaker Ted Hui has been arrested over a chaotic Legislative Council meeting in May, unveiling yet another conflicting chapter in the history of the region, media reports said.
The total number of detained activists and legislators from the bloc currently stands at eight.
Democratic Party legislator Ted Hui Chi-fung was held when he reported to Western Police Station that morning for a separate matter, according to his party, reports South China Morning Post.
He was arrested and charged with two offences under the Legco (Powers and Privileges) Ordinance – contempt and interference with the legislature’s officers – at a tumultuous sitting of the House Committee on May 8. Hui, who was later granted bail, accused police of making an arbitrary arrest, the newspaper reported.
Seven of Hui’s political allies, including incumbent and former lawmakers as well as activists, were arrested on Sunday and also charged with contempt and interference offences under the ordinance, the newspaper reported.
Hong Kong has witnessed major protests in recent months.
China's parliament recently backed a new security bill meant to bring about tighter control over Hong Kong, which underlines that anyone who undermines Beijing's authority in the territory will be treated as a criminal and his/her action will be deemed crime against the state.
The new bill has caused deep concern among those who say it could end Hong Kong's unique status.
The move sparked a new wave of anti-mainland protest.
