Pakistan: Protesters stopped from entering Quetta’s Red Zone
Quetta: Police on Tuesday prevented an attempt of the Balochistan Employees and Workers Grand Alliance to enter the Red Zone in Pakistan's Quetta city to stage a sit-in in support of their demands.
The protesting employees, who had arrived in the provincial capital from the entire Quetta district, marched on various roads and later moved to the Red Zone, reports Dawn News.
Police blocked their way.
They did not allow the protesters to enter the zone.
Police tried to stop the marchers through negotiations, but they still wanted to enter the Red Zone. Police then resorted to teargassing and baton-charge. As a result of tear-gas shelling and baton-charge, some employees, who were chanting slogans against the government, were injured, reports Dawn News.
Addressing the protesting employees, Balochistan Employees and Workers Grand Alliance representatives said they would continue their protest till the acceptance of their demands.
“Government employees have been forced to take to the street. We had given a deadline of March 15 to meet their demands but the government did nothing,” they were quoted as saying by Dawn News, adding that due to the current inflation and wrong policies of the government, the employees had been forced to commit suicide.
