Sri Lanka imposes daily electricity cuts after Chinese-built coal generator trips

Colombo:Sri Lanka's state owned Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) on Wednesday said it would impose daily power cuts in the country for the coming four days due to restoration of the national power grid following a sudden nationwide power failure on Monday which plunged the country into crisis and even disrupted essential services.

The disruption occurred after a technical failure at Chinese built Norochcholai coal power plant in the north western region. 

The CEB said the country had been divided into 4 groups and each group would face a power cut for one hour 30 minutes in the morning, and a further one hour in the evening, reports Xinhua news agency.

Technicians were attempting to restore the national grid as soon as possible after a technical failure in the Kerawalapitiya substation..

The snag led to an islandwide power failure last Monday which lasted for over 8 hours, disrupting businesses and daily lives.

The Power Ministry has appointed a high level committee to probe the sudden failure and has asked for a report within a week. Enditem.
