Khartoum, Jul 1 (Xinhua) Sudan's Transitional Military Council (TMC) on Monday announced arrest of armed elements who fired gun shots at regular forces and citizens during the popular protests in the capital Khartoum on Sunday.

"Some elements, which tend to sow sedition among the regular forces, fired gun shots from the Youths and Children Palace in Omdurman," said Gen. Jamal Omer, head of the TMC Security Committee, in a statement.

"The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) arrested those elements after they were identified by citizens who were participating in the protests near the military hospital in Omdurman," he added.

He further said that "three RSF soldiers were injured in the incident, while two citizens were killed and many others injured."

During Sunday's protests, 12 policemen, including two officers, were injured in Gadarif town in eastern Sudan, and one RSF solider wounded in El Obied town in north Kordfan, while many citizens were injured in a number of other Sudanese States, he added.

Undersecretary of Sudan's Health Ministry Suleiman Abdel-Jabar earlier announced in a statement that seven people were killed and 181 injured in Sunday's protests all over the country.

On Sunday, tens of thousands of Sudanese citizens took to the streets in Khartoum and other cities in huge protests, which was called for by the opposition Freedom and Change Alliance to put pressure on the TMC to hand power to the civilians.
