Rs. 50 lakh net worth at 30, yet no car or house: Man says he feels behind his friends

Despite reaching the financial milestone, the man said he was unsure whether he had been too conservative with his money and questioned whether he should be spending more to enjoy life.

In his Reddit post, he wrote: “I am 30 years old, and I got married almost two years ago. I know ₹50 lakh at the age of 30 may not sound like a huge amount to many people, especially when I am married and this amount is not only my individual savings. My wife’s hard-earned salary is also a big part of this journey. But still, this milestone made me pause and think.”

The internet user said that despite their savings, the couple continues to live in a rented home and does not own a car.

“We are still living on rent. We don’t own a car. I still use my eight-year-old bike. Its self-start does not work, one indicator is broken, and sometimes when I am travelling with my wife, the bike stops in the middle of the road and I have to kick-start it again,” he wrote.

The man said that after seven years of work experience, he switched jobs and reached a salary of around ₹20 lakh per annum last year.

“Before that, I was earning around ₹11 LPA. I don’t consider myself exceptionally talented. I still struggle to explain my answers properly in interviews. I know my communication skills need improvement. My wife earns around ₹12 LPA, and together we take home around ₹2.2 lakh per month,” he said.

He added that the couple had not even taken a proper honeymoon after getting married.

Comparing his financial situation with that of his college friends, the man said he often feels that he is falling behind.

“When I speak to a few of my college friends, I get to know that some of them have already bought two flats — one where they live and another one they have rented out. Almost everyone around me seems to have a car. Some are travelling to places like Bali and Maldives, while I sometimes get irritated when my wife orders an expensive makeup product or something fancy after getting influenced by social media,” he wrote.

The man said he was proud of crossing the ₹50 lakh net-worth mark but remained conflicted about balancing financial security with enjoying life.

“I am proud that we crossed ₹50 lakh, but at the same time, I feel confused. I want to grow, provide a better life, buy a home, travel with my wife, and enjoy life — but I also fear losing financial stability. I would genuinely like to hear from people who are ahead in this journey,” he said.

His post soon drew reactions from other Reddit users, with many encouraging him to enjoy the fruits of his hard work while maintaining financial discipline.

One user wrote: “You’re doing well. If you feel a car will make a significant difference to your quality of life, then get a car, ideally, a second-hand smaller car.”
