CU students' agitation over exam schedule steps into second day
Kolkata, Mar 11 (IBNS): A section of Calcutta University (CU) students, who are demonstrating since Thursday against the university's examination schedule for BA/BSc/BCom Part-III (Honours) students, held a protest rally from university's College Street campus to Kolkata's downtown Esplanade area on Friday.
Following the 'political flag-less' protest march, two delegations of protesting students went to meet Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi and Election Commission officials here.
The governor, however, did not meet the students.
The Calcutta University has set examination schedule for BA/BSc/BCom Part-III (Hons.) students from April 1 to 13, which are in-between assembly election dates. Citing security concern, a section of CU students are demanding to hold the examination after assembly polls.
Students held a sit-in-demonstration at CU College Street campus on Thursday and university's Vice-Chancellor (CU) Sugata Marjit was stuck in his office for hours during the agitation. Later in the evening, the police and few Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) activists took him out of the campus safely.
However, when he was asked about the movement, Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi said, "What is important, examination or election, whom will you give the preference? Will you prefer election first or examination first? Let the students decide."
Condemning of the demonstration and advising the students to be patient, state Education Minister Partha Chatterjee said, "I guess, the SFI is the ringleader behind this movement. From what is evident, students of Jadavpur University and Presidency University are conducting this agitation. I think Calcutta University students are not involved with this movement."
Meanwhile, claiming that he was given death-threat, CU VC Sugata Marjit on Friday lodged a complaint at Jorasanko Police Station against a student. The student, Ankita Das, allegedly threatened Marjit to kill in a status on social networking site Facebook. Police have started investigation into the matter.
The CU authority, however, clearly stated that the examinations would not be rescheduled. Protesting students said that the movement would be strengthened, if their demand is not be fulfilled.
