Jammu and Kashmir fashion show triggers controversy, fashion designers Shiva and Narresh apologise

| @indiablooms | Mar 10, 2025, at 05:49 pm

Shivan and Narresh, the fashion designers who drew flak for organising an outdoor show in Jammu and Kashmir's Gulmarg during the holy month of Ramzan, have apologised for hosting the event.

They wrote on X: "We deeply regret any hurt caused by our recent presentation in Gulmarg during the holy month of Ramadan. Our sole intention was to celebrate creativity and the ski & après-ski lifestyle, without any desire to offend anyone or any religious sentiments."

Amid sharp criticisms by political leaders in the Valley, the designers said they acknowledged the concerns raised over the fashion show.

"Respect for all cultures and traditions is at our heart, and we acknowledge the concerns raised. We sincerely apologize for any unintended discomfort and appreciate the feedback from our community," the designers said.

"We remain committed to being more mindful and respectful," they said.

CM Omar Abdullah Says Shock And Anger Understandable

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who was recently elected to the position, said the shock and anger expressed over the event was understandable.

He said action will be taken after a report on the incident is submitted by officials.

He wrote on X: "The shock & anger are totally understandable. The images I have seen show a complete disregard for local sensitivities & that too during this holy month. My office has been in touch with the local authorities & I’ve asked for a report to be submitted within the next 24 hours. Further action, as appropriate, will follow from this report."

Omar Abdulllah-Led Government draws flak

A large section of political leaders criticised the Jammu and Kashmir government led by CM Omar Abdullah over the fashion show which they termed as 'obscene'.

Former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti said the fashion show left her 'shocked'.

She wrote on X: "Deeply troubling to witness vulgar images from the recent fashion show in Gulmarg. The fact that such an event which descended into an indecent spectacle took place during the sacred month of Ramadan is nothing short of shocking."

"It is deplorable that private hoteliers are allowed to promote such vulgarity through these events, which blatantly contradict our cultural values. The government cannot simply absolve itself of responsibility by labeling this a private affair. Shrugging off accountability could pave the way for more such events, ultimately inflicting severe damage on our culture and society," she said.

Umar Farooq, chief priest of Srinagar's Jama Masjid and the chairman of the separatist Hurriyat Conference, said obscenity in the name of tourism promotion will not be tolerated.

"Outrageous! That In the holy month of Ramzan an obscene fashion show is organised in #Gulmarg, pictures & videos from which have gone viral sparking shock and anger among people. How could it be tolerated in the valley known for its sufi, saint culture and the deeply religious outlook of its people? Those involved should be immediately held accountable. Such obscenity in the name of tourism promotion will not be tolerated in #Kashmir.!" he said.
