RG Kar: Junior doctor Aniket Mahato, who was hospitalised falling ill due to hunger strike, critical but stable
Kolkata/IBNS: West Bengal Junior doctor Aniket Mahato, who was hospitalised after falling ill due to an indefinite hunger strike on Thursday late night, is now critical but stable.
As per medical bulletin, Dr. Mahato is now responding to medical treatment, has no fever, blood pressure level is normal and is conscious.
However, Dr. Mahato, who is in the Critical Care Unit, will not be discharged soon.
Dr. Mahato was taken to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where he is also posted for work, on Wednesday late night.
Doctors said Dr. Mahato was suffering from dehydration and the Ketone level in his urine was high.
According to local TV reports, Mahato's pulse rate dropped on Thursday and he was seen sweating when other fellow doctors decided to take him to RG Kar Hospital.
Seven junior doctors, agitating over the rape and murder of their colleague at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, are fasting unto death since Saturday amid the Durga Puja celebrations across West Bengal.
The junior doctors on Wednesday met the West Bengal government's Chief Secretary Manoj Pant with their demands including the resignation of Health Secretary NS Nigam, elimination of threat culture, installation of CCTV cameras in hospitals, providing of safety and security.
After the meeting, the junior doctors said, "We got nothing concrete from the meeting. We have been asked to wait for the pujo to be over. The government will think over the demands in the third week of October when the festival will be over."
The protests escalated largely on Tuesday after about 50 senior doctors at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital submitted a symbolic mass resignation in solidarity with their juniors.
As the mass resignation is symbolic, the senior doctors haven't stopped attending patients as of now.
Nabanna, the state secretariat, has reportedly claimed it didn't receive any resignation letter from the senior doctors.
The junior doctors launched their hunger strike on Saturday night after the state government failed to meet their 24-hour deadline for addressing their demands, which expired at 8:30 pm that evening.
